Good morning everybody here is my wrap up from the MSHSAA Class 2 District 9 Quarterfinal round held Saturday at Eagles Field on the Campus of Plato High School.
(4) Belle vs (5) Laquey
In the early game the Belle Tigers would jump out to an early lead and never looked back in a 7-4 victory over Laquey. Belle got their first two run in the bottom of the first. Lead off hitter Kolton Clark would double then Hunter Loughridge would be hit by a pitch. A Wild pitch would move them both into scoring position for Mason Price. Price would deliver belting a single up the middle that would bring home both Clark and Loughridge making it 2-0 after one. Laquey would rattle the bats in the top of the second as they would tie this one up at 2-2. Laquey's Ian Mathies would coax a walk then Frank Norris would get hit in the left arm with a pitch to put two aboard. Mike Norris would bloop a single into left field that would get deep enough for Mathies and F. Norris to scamper home to tie the game up. The Tigers would respond in the third when Mason Price was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame then a walk issued to Sawyer Abel would put two on. Belle's Designated hitter, Tom Brewer would smack a single to right field that would bring in Price and Abel giving the Tigers a 4-2 edge after three. Belle would add three more in the bottom of the fourth. Jesse Wilson would double then a single by Clark would bring in Wilson. Loughridge would get hit by a pitch then a single by Price would put two on. A balk would move the runners both into scoring position and a double by Abel would plate both of them making it 7-2 Belle after four. Laquey's last two would come in the top of the fifth. Mike Norris and Bo Brothers would both walk. Joe Benak would single to bring in Norris then another walk to Brannon Rivard would load the bases full of Hornets. Laquey catcher Austin Mann would get drilled by a pitch to bring in Brothers making it 7-4. They would leave the bases loaded as Belle got out of the trouble with back to back strikeouts.

(3) Plato vs (6) Richland
The host Plato Eagles would rally for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to overtake the upset minded Richland Bears 7-6 and advance to the semifinals. The Bears would get to work early as they would get one in the top of the first when Zayne McNeil would walk then steal second. A Dane Peterson single would be enough to get McNeil home making it 1-0 after one. Richland would get another in their half of the third when Seth Baker singled and stole second. A Steven Domingue single would bring in Baker making it 2-0. The Eagles would respond in the bottom of the third. Jake Murrell would double then Eagle's Shortstop Tate Hildebrand would single up the middle bringing in Murrell making it 2-1 after one. The host Eagles would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Keagan Adams would get things started when he walked and stole second. A ground out by Murrell would move Adams to third. Then a pick off play to third had Adams dead to rights out but the third basemen air mailed the throw home allowing him to score safely. Tate Hildebrand would double the a double off the bat of Plato third basemen John Anthony brought home Tate making it 3-2.
The Bears would respond big time in the top of the sixth when they would bring in four runs. Domingue would start off the frame with a double to center. Dane Peterson would be hit by a pitch and Tayor Andrews would walk to loaded the bases with Bears. Richland Pitcher Austin Walters would stroke a single to bring it Domingue and Dawson Andrews would single to score Peterson. Walters would come home on a wild pitch and Baker would lace a double to right field to score D. Andrews making it 6-3 Richland after six. Drama in the bottom of the seventh....Plato would have to rally. Adams would get things started with a single then a pop up would be the first out of the inning. Tate would single to put two on. A ball hit sharply to third off the bat of Anthony should have legitimately ended the game. The Richland third basemen stepped on third for the second out then threw to first. The runner appeared to be out by a step up the call was safe so the frame continued. Wyatt Penley would hit a single to score Tate then Jalen Supancic would walk to load the bases. A single to right field off the bat of freshman James Sponsel would score both Anthony and Drew Clark (who was pinch running for Penley) to tie the game up at 6-6. Another freshman would prove to be the hero as Gage Crews would hit a very Plato-esk bloop single to shallow right field to bring home Supancic for the win in walk off fashion.
"You know we never said die and gave up down three runs in the seventh and down to our last out. It would have been easy to accept defeat but my kids battled and it paid off. We caught a break with the call at first base. It was really encouraging when two freshman (Sponsel and Crews) deliver in such high pressure situations like today. We have a lot of young players that have made big contributions throughout the year and helped us win this one." Plato Head skipper Mark Vaughn.
