Pierce City fell 52-47 to Iberia in the Class 2 quarterfinals at Drury’s O’Reilly Family Event Center on Saturday, sending the Rangers to state for the first time since 1968 and ending the Eagles’ inaugural district-winning season.
Iberia rode a 12-point lead into the second quarter, shooting 4-of-6 from the 3-point line, but started the second half trailing by three.
Iberia six-foot-nine freshman center Dexter Frisbie shook off a scoreless and foul-laden first half and made his presence known with 10 points in the third quarter to keep the Rangers in pace with a hot-handed Pierce City offense led by seniors Cody Fitchpatrick and Cedric O’Hara.
“(Coach) said, ‘Keep (Fitchpatrick) guarded, don’t foul and stay on the ground,” Frisbie said of his second-half adjustments.
“The way he played in the first half was like the way he played in the first half of his first game this season – no points and rushing his shots,” said Rangers coach Steve Scholfield. “I thought he did a great job in the second quarter continuing to guard and not drawing fouls.
“He sticks out so much (that) it’s easy to find him.”
Pierce City hit a scoring drought of over three minutes long in the fourth quarter, which saw Iberia turn a two-point deficit into a four-point lead and swing the momentum in its favor.
“We just couldn’t get it to go in,” said Eagles coach Matt Street. “We kept trying to feed it inside and go at their big kid to dish it back out but just could not get a bucket to go in.”
Street was coached by Scholfield for a Crocker squad that was defeated by eventual Class 1 state champion Bell City in the 2002 state quarterfinals.
“It’s so great to see all of the green and all of the support from the community,” said Scholfield of what the Rangers’ trip to state does for the town.
Pierce City ends the 2012-2013 season with a 19-11 record, while Iberia will play two more in Columbia and look to improve on their 27-3 record.
