Good evening everybody I would first like to extend Holiday greetings to everybody in Frisco League on this Pre-Christmas weekend. Here is my wrap up from the Newburg Vienna game last night.
Newburg 82 Vienna 87
The Newburg Wolves would travel deep into the heart of Maries County to face the Vienna Eagles and would come up just short 87-82 in a game that would need overtime to decide a winner. The first quarter would be a personal duel between Vienna's Cody Kleffner and Newburg's Ryan Ward. Kleffner would fire in 13 points for his Eagles while Ward would drill four three pointers for a dozen in the frame. Vienna would led this one 18-16 after one. The Wolves would roll in the second period as they would continue their hot shooting and outscore Vienna 18-13 in the frame to take the 34-31 lead into the intermission. In the third period the offense would take front and center stage as this one turned into a Frisco League style shootout. Vienna would out gun the Wolves in the frame 27-20 to push it up to a 58-54 Eagles lead. The fourth quarter would see Newburg rally to overcome a sizable deficit late. Vienna would open up as much as an eight point lead with four minutes left in the game. Newburg would get a couple run outs for lay ups to cut the lead down to four points. A pair of Alan Yelton three balls would end up putting the Wolves on top. With 20 seconds left Vienna would trail by two points with the ball when Chandler Harker found Connor Backues for the game tying lay up. Newburg would hold for the last shot but a Vienna trap would stop that shot from being taken and this would go to bonus basketball with it tied 72-72. In the extra period Vienna would score the first five points in the overtime period early on to put the pressure on Newburg. The Wolves would keep it close but their couldn't claw their way to the lead. Vienna would hit a few free throws late and win this one. The Eagles outscored Newburg 15-10 in the extra period.
"I think overall we played well tonight but we still hard some silly mistakes that were unforced tonight that hurt us but this is a game that we can learn from and know what to expect when it comes to these high pressure situations. We really shot the ball well tonight and that was a little surprising because the back drop isn't the best here for shooters. We got down seven or eight in the fourth but we showed some grit not giving up. Ryan had a heck of a night and Robinson was really tough for us but Alan knocked down some big shots for us. That was big he has been struggling a little lately and when he is knocking down shots we are tough. It was physical tonight and I though we handled that pretty well for the most part. We will get better from this one and be a better ball club after a game like this." Newburg Head Coach Doug Ward.

B-Game Newburg 49 Vienna 39
The Newburg Wolves would grind out a 49-39 win over a very physical Vienna Junior Varsity squad. In the first period Newburg would use some tough defense to squeeze Vienna's offense holding them to just five points. It was the Wolves on top 12-5 after one. The second quarter would be played evenly as both teams put up twelve points in the frame and it was Newburg on top 24-17 at the break. Newburg's defense got after it in the third period again taking center stage as they frustrate the Eagles only allowing three points in the quarter while putting up 9 points. Newburg was up 33-20 after three. Vienna would rally hard in the fourth as they would use some physical play to make life tough on the Wolves but Newburg would hit their free throws to put this one away. Vienna would outscore Newburg 19-16 in the final seven minutes.
"This is the first time this season that we have played consistent for four full quarters in one game and it was the key to us getting the victory. Our defense did a very good job tonight of making Vienna uncomfortable in the half court and forced them into some bad shots. This was physical game but thats what you expect coming over to play in Vienna. Our kids did a good job of adjusting to the style of play and played some good tough defense without fouling. Offensively we hit some shots and made out free throws but it was our defense that really did the job holding them to single digits in two quarters. This is a great way to end our first half of the year." Newburg Junior Varsity Coach Logan Ray
